Stratford Girls’ Grammar School

 School introduction

Stratford Girls’ Grammar School is a grammar school for girls in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. The school has around 800 students. Stratford Girls’ Grammar School is based around a 15th century manor house that now serves as the Sixth Form Centre. Much of the manor house gardens is still intact and part of the school grounds.

Stratford Girls’ Grammar School specialises in languages and science. It is an academy, meaning it has more independence over its curriculum than most schools in the country.

The school also has excellent facilities for extracurricular activities, including recently refurbished tennis courts and a new 4 court sports hall with a fitness centre attached. The school opened a new library in 2015.

School performance

Stratford Girls’ Grammar School has consistently appeared among the top 20 state schools in England for GCSE results. In 2019, 80% of all GCSE results were Grade 9-7, with 31% at Grade 9. 98% of students achieved a strong pass in English and Maths. In 2019, the school’s Progress 8 score was 0.68, meaning that pupils achieve, on average, over two thirds of a grade higher per subject in their GCSE examinations than other pupils with the same prior attainment.

In 2019, 41% of A-level grades at the school were A or A*, with 21% of students achieving A or A* in all their subjects.

The school has an Outstanding Ofsted rating.

In 2022, in GCSEs 94% of all results were at Grade 9-7, 53% of all results were at Grade 9 and 29% of all results were at Grade 8. In A levels, 30% achieved A* grades, 66% achieved A*/A grades, 90% achieved A* – B grades and 49% achieved A* A grades in all subjects.

Stratford Girls 11 Plus Admissions information

 

Stratford Girls’ Grammar School only accepts students who have passed the 11+ exam. Competition is high, with more than seven applicants for each place in recent years. The school intends to accept 120 students for entry into Year 7 in 2024.

Parents must register their child for the 11+ Exam in the year before the proposed admission of their child. Parents who live in Birmingham should register with The Grammar Schools in Birmingham. Parents who live elsewhere should register with the Warwickshire County Council Admissions Service. Registration for the exam opens in May and closes in June. Parents must also name Stratford Girls’ Grammar School on the Common Application Form of their Local Authority. The results of the Stratford Girls 11 Plus are unlikely to be released by the time parents must submit their Common Application Form.

To gain a place, children must pass the Stratford Girls 11 Plus. Places are then allocated based on 11+ scores, but priority is given to students who live in the “Priority Circle”. This is a circle with a radius of just under 17 miles around Stratford.

Girls who are unsuccessful will automatically be placed on a waiting list. This list will also include girls who applied late or who registered late for the Stratford Girls 11 Plus. Girls who do not register for the exam in time may sit the exam the following March instead, and will be placed on the waiting list if they pass.

It is also possible to enter the school for sixth form. Anyone interested in this must complete and submit a form available on the school website.

 

Stratford Girls 11 Plus Admissions Timeline

 

The exact dates are yet to be confirmed.

8th May 2023

Parents must register their child for the 11+ Exam. Parents who live in Birmingham should register with The Grammar Schools in Birmingham. Parents who live elsewhere should register with the Warwickshire County Council Admissions Service.

Exam Date Not Yet Confirmed

Applicants sit the 11+ exam at a site in Birmingham or Warwickshire.

October 2023

Parents will receive their child’s 11+ Exam result.

Late October / early November 2023

Parents must name Stratford Girls’ Grammar School of the Common Application Form and submit it to their local authority.

Friday 1st March 2024 (2024 Admissions)

Successful girls are given offers to study at the school. Unsuccessful applicants who passed the Stratford Girls 11 Plus Exam are automatically placed on a waiting list, along with anyone who registered late for the Stratford Girls 11 Plus Exam.

Stratford Girls 11 Plus Examination

 

Stratford Girls’ Grammar School is part of a consortium of grammar schools in Warwickshire and Birmingham that use the same 11+ Exam. Registration for this exam is in the summer of the year before admission, and the exam itself is held in September.

The test consists of two papers, each lasting approximately an hour. These papers will be divided into smaller, separately timed sections which test verbal ability, numerical ability and non-verbal ability. All questions are multiple-choice. Applicants sit the Exam in one session lasting around 3 hours, with a short break in the middle.

Familiarisation papers, which provide a guide to the different kinds of questions to expect and how to answer them, are available on the website of The Birmingham Grammar Schools consortium. There are separate guides to comprehension, maths, non-verbal reasoning and word choice questions.

CEM, the exam provider, has also published familiarisation booklets for the maths and non-verbal reasoning parts of the exam. For the verbal reasoning component they have produced separate familiarisation booklets for comprehension questions and word choice questions.

Additional information

  • Location: Stratford Girls’ Grammar School  is located on the outskirts of Stratford-upon-Avon, a market town in Warwickshire known as the home of William Shakespeare. It is 22 miles southeast of Birmingham. Parents are advised to check their transport connections to the area before applying. The large sports fields are next to the school, and Stratford-upon-Avon Railway Station is nearby.
  • Boarding: Stratford Girls’ Grammar School does not offer boarding, but it does operate a system of four houses. All girls are part of a house, and receive individualised tutoring along with their housemates. This is part of a vertical tutoring system that allows pupils to make connections across year groups.

My child is doing an 11+ test for another school. Will they still have to do the 11+ test for Stratford Girls’ Grammar School?

Yes. All applicants must register for and complete 11+ Test. Stratford Girls’ Grammar School use the same 11+ Test as other grammar schools in Warwickshire and Birmingham. If you are also applying to one of these schools you will only have to sit the test once, and the result will be used in the application process for both schools.
