UKMT Maths Challenge in 2026: A Guide for Secondary School Students and Parents

What Is UKMT Maths Challenge?

UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) is a UK-based educational charity founded in 1996. Its mission is to support and enhance mathematics education for students aged 11–18, encouraging mathematical thinking, problem-solving, and curiosity beyond the classroom.

Each year, UKMT organises a wide range of national maths competitions and enrichment activities, reaching hundreds of thousands of students across the UK. These challenges are designed not only to test mathematical ability, but also to inspire confidence and enjoyment in mathematics.

What UKMT Competitions Are Available?

UKMT runs three main maths challenges, each aimed at a different age group:

  • Junior Mathematical Challenge (JMC)
  • Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC)
  • Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC)

Each challenge has a follow-on pathway to further rounds for high-performing students.

Junior Mathematical Challenge (JMC)

What is JMC?

  • Full name: Junior Mathematical Challenge
  • Exam time: Late April or early May
  • Who can take part: Year 7 and Year 8 students

The JMC focuses on logical thinking and problem-solving rather than advanced syllabus content. Students who perform particularly well may be invited to the Junior Kangaroo or Junior Olympiad, depending on their score.

Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC)

What is IMC?

  • Full name: Intermediate Mathematical Challenge
  • Exam time: Late January
  • Who can take part: Year 9 to Year 11 students

The IMC is the most relevant competition for GCSE-stage students. It tests mathematical reasoning, pattern recognition, and multi-step problem-solving.

IMC Follow-on Rounds

After the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge, students are invited to different follow-on rounds based on both their score and their school year.

Kangaroo Rounds
  • Grey Kangaroo – typically for Year 9 students who achieve a qualifying score
  • Pink Kangaroo – typically for Year 10 and Year 11 students with strong IMC performance

The Kangaroo rounds focus on extended multiple-choice, designed to test logical thinking in greater depth.

Olympiad Rounds
  • Cayley Olympiad – mainly for Year 9 students
  • Hamilton Olympiad – mainly for Year 10 students
  • Maclaurin Olympiad – mainly for Year 11 students

The Olympiad rounds are more demanding and require students to produce clear, well-structured written solutions. These papers place a strong emphasis on mathematical reasoning and proof-style thinking, making them excellent preparation for advanced study.

Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC)

What is SMC?

  • Full name: Senior Mathematical Challenge
  • Exam time: Early October
  • Who can take part: Year 13 and below

The SMC is aimed at older students, particularly those studying A Level Maths or Further Maths. Successful candidates may progress to:

  • Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo
  • British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO Round 1 and Round 2)

Why Is the Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC) Important?

The Senior Mathematical Challenge plays a key role in the UK maths competition pathway and offers significant academic value for high-performing students.

Firstly, students who perform particularly well in the SMC may be invited to take part in British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 (BMO1) and potentially BMO2. These papers are much closer in style to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), focusing on deep mathematical reasoning, creativity, and rigorous problem-solving rather than routine techniques.

Secondly, the UK team for the International Mathematical Olympiad is ultimately selected from students who excel in these advanced rounds. For students with strong mathematical ability, the SMC represents an important first step towards this elite pathway.

Finally, strong performance in the SMC — especially at the BMO stage — can be highly beneficial for university applications. Success in these competitions is widely recognised by leading UK universities and is often viewed as a strong academic enrichment achievement, adding significant value to an application.

Which Competitions Are Suitable for GCSE Students?

For most students at GCSE level, the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge (IMC) is the most appropriate starting point. It aligns well with GCSE Maths content while extending students through unfamiliar, problem-solving-style questions.

After the IMC:

  • Students are selected for Intermediate Kangaroo or Intermediate Olympiad based on performance and age.
  • These competitions help develop advanced mathematical thinking and resilience, which are valuable for both GCSE exams and future A Level study.

Do Students Need Long-Term Preparation?

UKMT competitions do not require years of specialised training. However, regular exposure to problem-solving questions and familiarity with past papers can make a significant difference.
