St. Mary’s Grammar School is a grammar school located in Magherafelt, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The School is a coeducational school established in 1927, is for students aged 11-18, and now edcates around 1099 pupils. Deirdre Gillespie has been appointed as the principal since 2011.
St Mary’s Grammar School is ranked second in Magherafelt based on its performance data and Ofsted rating. The School has consistently been placed among the top grammar schools in Northern Ireland in the Belfast Telegraph’s League Table.

St Mary’s Grammar School, Magherafelt’s Admissions Process (Year 8): 2024 Entry
PPTC Entrance Exam 2023-2024
As a part of the admissions process for entry into Year 8, St. Mary’s is a member of the Post-Primary Transfer Consortium (PPTC), which uses the GL Entrance Assessment English and Mathematics. In November, 2023, St. Mary’s Grammar School hosted the 2022–23 PPTC Entrance Assessment. In December 2023, the Supplementary Entrance Assessment will take place. In February 2023, St. Mary’s will mail GL statements of outcomes to parents and guardians (first class).

Preparing for St Mary’s Grammar School, Magherafelt’s Admissions (Year 8)
Children will take two exams, one each in English and Math, which will be administered by GL Assessment. Students will receive practice sections before each examination to become used to the exam format. All questions are multiple-choice.
English paper: 60 questions must be answered in 50 minutes by the students. Three reading passages are presented at the beginning of the paper, followed by a number of comprehension questions for each. Numerous questions on grammar and spelling are included. A few generic questions are asked towards the end of the article. 40% of the marks go to spelling, grammar, and general questions, and 60% of the marks are for the comprehension questions that come after the reading sections.
Maths paper: The maths test normally follows the school curriculum, however some questions, like one on rudimentary logic, may not be included in any curriculum. The majority of questions have been designed to either test candidates’ comprehension of mathematical ideas and procedures or their ability to apply their mathematical knowledge and abilities in a variety of real-world contexts. The remaining questions call for memorization of mathematical information, such as characteristics or geometric nomenclature.
