Brief Overview of Altrincham Grammar School for Girls and the School’s Performance

 

The school opened its doors in 1910, and in the last 111 years, has developed into a centre for academic success renowned for delivering a world-class education. It is the largest all-girls grammar school in England and is considered a leader in secondary education for mathematics, science, PHSE, and Modern Foreign Languages. The school was the first recipient of the National Teaching Schools award to recognise its commitment to building partnerships with other schools that enhance pupils’ opportunities. 

 

The exceptional welfare of its pupils is evident from their academic achievements. With a 2018/19 Progress 8 score of 0.19, meaning that pupils at this school are, on average, likely to achieve a higher than expected grade than predictions made based on their primary school attainment. Data from the same year highlights that the school’s Attainment 8 score is 78.6, significantly higher than both the local authority and national average. In 2022 A levels,  95% of examinations graded at A*-B and 99.5% graded at A*-C. There is a great deal to celebrate, with a remarkable 106 students achieving A* or A in all their subjects. 47 students achieved A* grades across the board; indeed, 48% of all exams were graded A*.

 

In 2022 GCSEs, the percentage of pupils achieving Grade 9/8 was 72% and the percentage of pupils achieving Grade 7-9 was  87%. 

 

Altrincham Grammar 11 plus (for girls) Admissions Process: 2024 Entry 

For entry to the school in 2024, parents will need to register their child for the 11 plus entrance exam. The school is part of the Trafford Grammar Schools GL Consortium (TGSCC), which uses the GL 11 plus assessment. Registration information will be available in May, so please make sure to check this link for an update regularly.

May 2023 – Information about 11+ test registration will be available

Please refer to the school’s website to find out more information about registering for AGGS’ 11+ entrance exam. 

June 2023 – 11 plus exam registration for AGGS opens.

Parents and guardians of Year 5 pupils can now begin registering their child for the September 11+ exam. Please note that this also serves as the Supplementary Information Form (SIF). 

June 2023 – 11 plus exam registration deadline for AGGS

This is the deadline for registering for 2023 11 plus exam. Please note that if you miss this deadline, your child may not be entitled to sit the entrance test for this school. While late applications are sometimes accepted, this is by no means guaranteed. 

September 2023 – Common Application Form (CAF) opens for submission

Please submit the Common Application Form to your local authority; you must list Altrincham Grammar School for Girls as one of the preferences to be offered a place. Forms are sent to parents via primary schools on behalf of Trafford Council. 

September 2023 – Date of the 11 plus entrance exam for AGGS. 

The school will communicate the time and location of the test in advance. 

October 2023 – Deadline for CAF submission. 

Trafford Council will stop accepting forms on this date. Again, please ensure to list this school as your first choice. 

March 2024 – National Offer Day

Trafford Council will contact parents/guardians to inform them of their allocated secondary school. Subject to passing the entrance test and meeting all other criteria, your child should receive an offer of a place at AGGS. 

March 2024 – Deadline for parents to accept or appeal the decision.  

Parents/guardians need to accept or reject the decision made by Trafford Council. If you reject the decision, you will need to follow the appeals process as outlined by the school. (Please see FAQs at the bottom of this page). 

 

As 2024 Admissions Policy is not out yet, please refer to the 2023 Admissions Policy. All dates stated above are to be confirmed.  

 

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls’ 11 Plus Exam

 

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls is a selective Academy Grammar School that manages its own admissions. It is part of the Trafford Grammar School Consortium, which includes Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Sale Grammar School, Stretford Grammar School, and Urmston Grammar School. GL Assessment has been selected as the test provider for the Year 7 entry test from 2023 and onwards. The test will consist of mathematics, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning, as per the admission policies. GL Assessment will create a unique test paper for the Trafford Consortium, which will not be the same as the papers used by other schools. The test will comprise of two papers, each approximately one hour long, and will test all three skills. Registration details for the entrance exam will be available on the schools’ websites in the spring term of 2023.

Altrincham Grammar 11 Plus: Additional Information about AGGS

The school offers a broad curriculum, and at Key Stage 3, pupils are taught in mixed ability groups. During that time, pupils will choose two of the three Modern Foreign Languages on offer, including French, German, and Spanish. At Key Stage 4, both English Language, English Literature, and mathematics are mandatory. Following the EBacc system, GCSE pupils will also need to choose from either History or Geography (can select both) one of the languages studied at KS3 and a science (single or multiple).

For the 2024 test, the pass mark is 324, but oversubscription criteria may apply. 

 

What if too many candidates score 324 in the 11+ exam?

In this instance, the oversubscription criteria will apply. Please refer to section 4.0 of the 2023 Admissions Policy.

 

What is the AGGS appeals process?

Parents can exercise their right to appeal. However, please be aware that this is overseen directly by the school and not the local authority. Email the Admissions Officer at admissions@aggs.bfet.uk to request an appeal pack.
