What will my child learn in Year 1 maths?

The principal focus of Key Stage 1 mathematics teaching is to ensure that your child can understand maths in a very practical way. Pupils will be investigating, counting, playing number games, and using everyday scenarios and objects to assist them in solving problems.

Additionally, your child will be expected to understand the language used in maths and is able to express their ways of solving each method. This can all be easily practised at home, with worksheets, activities, and a bit of encouragement.

Topics that are covered in Year 1 maths

These are some of the specific topics that will be covered during Year 1 maths, now maths can be a bit daunting even for us adults. However, we have created a guide for you to follow through each topic.

Number and place value

This topic will allow your child to learn to count up to and slightly beyond 100 in multiples of 1, 2, 5, and 10.  Additionally, they will learn to count aloud and will represent numbers using pictures and concrete objects like sticks, straws, and number lines.

Calculating

Year 1 maths calculating will be introducing addition, subtracting, multiplication and division. Your child will learn to read, write, and interpret mathematical statements.

Measuring

During key stage one, your child will have explored measurement in relation to length, height, weight, volume, and time. Additionally, they will also learn about money, recognising the value of coins and notes.

Geometry

Year 1 maths will include this topic. This will allow your child to recognise common 2D and 3D shapes and they will be able to explain simple turns (for example, a half-turn). They will begin to use some basic geometry words, like sides and edges. The focus during this period will be 2D and 3D.

Year 1 maths worksheets, are they helpful?

During the Key stage one stage, it is especially important for your child to get grips with maths in a practical, hands-on way. This is all very new to them and expecting them to learn without the encouragement and extra activities can be difficult. During their time at reception and nursery, they have been taught through play and activities.

Year 1 is not much different and is especially important for them to be able to work individually. It is their first taste of formal education, one of the best ways to ensure a smooth transition from Reception to Year 1 is to use these resources such as worksheets and games. This allows children to engage with the curriculum and strive.

Of course, similarly to games, this can be hard and overwhelming to find hence why Think Academy has made an easy access way of finding them.
