Understanding the Year 2 Maths National Curriculum
The National Curriculum for Mathematics in England outlines what all children should know by the end of Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2).
Year 2 Mathematics Curriculum Overview
- Begin counting in multiples of 2, 3, and 5; count forwards and backwards in tens from any given number.

Choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure:
- Length/height in cm or m
- Mass in g or kg
- Capacity in litres or ml
- Temperature in °C
- Use rulers, scales, and measuring containers accurately.
- Compare and order measurements using <, >, and =.
Money
- Recognise and use £ and pence (£, p) symbols.
- Combine coins to make given amounts and find different combinations of the same value.
- Solve simple money problems, including calculating change.
Time
- Sequence and compare intervals of time.
- Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour.
- Understand hours, minutes, and seconds, and their relationships.

Properties of Shapes
Identify and describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, including:
- Number of sides, edges, vertices, and faces.
- Flat and curved surfaces.
- Draw and recognise shapes with specific properties (e.g. triangles, rectangles, cubes, and pyramids).
- Recognise and draw lines of symmetry in 2D shapes.
Position and Direction
- Describe position, direction, and movement, including whole, half, quarter, and three-quarter turns.
- Use mathematical vocabulary to describe movement and rotation (e.g. clockwise, anticlockwise, right angle turns).
